The new SARA-R42x, supporting LTE Cat.M1, NBIoT and 2G, has reached IP status

The latest u-blox cellular modules, the SARA-R42x family, supporting Cat.M, NBIoT and 2G technologies with optional built in GNSS, have reached Initial Production status.

All ES2 units may be upgraded to the new, full of features and improvements, version.

The SARA-R422M8S introduces an innovative approach to the GNSS and Cellular implementation within one module. The positioning chip being an independent, full-fledged u-blox M8 chip, which allows simultaneous operation of both, GNSS and Cellular, technologies. Such approach allows the SARA-R422M8S to keep the parameters and performance, as if it were two separate modules.

For details, upgrade files and instructions please contact ubloxFAE@microdis.net.
We will be happy to support you and provide complete information by our sales network.

LTE Cat.M 20dBm or 23dBm modules ?

LTE Cat.M or Cat.NB (NBIoT) standards use tailored trasmission schemes, timers and retransmissions. Low cost solutions provide RF transmission power reduced to 20dBm, other modules offer 23dBm, is it a big difference ?

Worse coverage needs more retransmissions, each one costing a chunk of precious energy. Does reducing the Tx power by half (that's 3dBm) from 23dBm to 20dBm make battery lifetime shorter ?

Does it make sense to pay a little more for LTE Cat.M modules with more Tx power ?

More for this discussion can be found in the posts:
Why industrial IoT needs 23dBm transmission power

Ten years NBIoT on a single battery

CellLocate - positioning even without GPS signal introduced by u-blox

CellLocate u-bloxu-blox - swiss expert in positioning technologies - has embedded cellular positioning technology CellLocate into its LEON (2G) and LISA (3G) families of wireless modules.

CellLocate can be used together with GPS/Glonass/Galileo receivers - to estimate position when GPS signal is blocked (in the garage, tunnel, inside the building) or jammed (using jammer). Moreover, accuracy is high enough for many applications, where CellLocate can be used alone, saving the cost of GPS/Glonass receiver.
